Outdoor concerts and events have been cancelled, and parks are emptying out by mid-morning.

The consequences of the heat wave extend beyond Phoenix, with Death Valley experiencing an 84-day streak of 110-degree temperatures. In fact, nearly every day this month has seen a global average temperature warmer than the previous hottest recorded day before 2023.

As the city struggles to cope with the extreme heat, efforts are underway to provide relief. Some 200 cooling and hydration centers have been set up across the metro area, although most shut down between 4 pm and evening due to the intense heat.

'When it's like this, you just have to get into the shade,' said one resident, Lori Miccichi, who has been homeless for about three years.
